Carlsberg Group is one of the world's leading brewery groups, for over 170 years they have built up an astounding portfolio of some of the world's finest alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages such as Carlsberg, Tuborg, Ringnes, Lvivske, the sophisticated French 1664 Blanc, Belgium abbey beer, and so much more.

In late 2019, Carlsberg Group fully acquired Cambrew – one the largest brewery in Cambodia, adding the iconic Angkor Premium Beer to their already diverse portfolio.

With this recent acquisition, Carlsberg Group needed to establish more presence within the local Cambodian market by translating their visual communication consistently into the local tongue. This however proved to be challenging since there are not a lot of well-designed Khmer typefaces on the market.

The challenge was figuring out how we would translate the unique features of Carlsberg Sans such as the rounded counters, and open counters into Khmer without losing the essence of the Khmer script, the risk was that the result might end up looking a little bit too foreign for the local audience.

Through extensive research and experiments, we managed to find a middle ground, the perfect balance between making the letterforms instantly feels Khmer yet still on-brand and utilizing all the unique features of the English.
