Peng Huoth Group originally started as a property development company in 2005 under the name "Borey Peng Huoth". Over the past decade, they have quickly grown to prominence through their luxury and eco-residential development projects. Having established themselves as a key player within the property development sector, in 2016 the brand underwent a major rebrand and expansion, adding two new key business units, PH Construction, and PH Investment.
In 2021, the brand initiated a slight refresh of its identity, the goal was to make the identity system more robust so it could accommodate the various new development projects and sub-brands it was establishing. Unifying their brand touchpoints in both Khmer and English proved to be quite a challenge since there aren't many Khmer typefaces on the market that have a consistent Latin set, let alone one that reflected Peng Huoth's ethos as a brand.
We were tasked to create a new typeface that would help solve this problem while also being uniquely Peng Huoth's. With this prompt in mind, we adopted a semi-serif direction for the Latin set. This direction proved to be a perfect balance between communicating the brand's renowned heritage while also hinting at its place in the future of Cambodia. Rather than taking direct design cues from the Latin set, the Khmer set takes a period equivalent angle instead. Taking inspiration from hand-drawn typography but enforcing it with modern typographic sensibilities.
Simply titled "Peng Huoth", the typeface is available in 5 weights and now acts as a key component within their brand-building arsenal, allowing the brand to be more relevant on more applications both printed and digital. Peng Huoth Group is the first Cambodian company to have a custom typeface with both a Khmer and Latin set.
The terminals and serifs of the letterforms also share the same angle that can be found in their iconic PH monogram.
